Pianist Eger Levitt (35) was awarded the Carl von Ositsky Prize by the City of Oldenburg. The ইউরো 10,000 prize will be presented on December 9, as announced by the city on Wednesday. The jury justified Levitt’s decision by consistently defending him against racism, anti-Semitism, hostility towards Muslims, and language cruelty. “As a musician and with the voice of a man who thinks, speaks and works politically, Eger Levitt has reached out to people of different generations and made them sensitive to the urgent need for a committed civil society.”

Levitt was born to Jewish parents in 1987 in his hometown of Novgorod in the Soviet Union. As a child he moved to Hanover with his family, where he continued his piano studies. Studies, scholarships, concerts in different countries and many awards follow. With a “house concert” on the piano, Levitt, who lives in Berlin, created a stir on social media during the Corona epidemic. Internationally acclaimed pianists campaign against right-wing extremism and for more climate protection and peace.

The Karl von Ositsky Prize for Contemporary History and Politics is awarded every two years in memory of Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ositsky (1889-1938). The award honors individuals who have stood up for the life and work of Karl von Ositsky or against national socialism and the democratic tradition and in an outstanding way in Germany.
