The number of Deutschlandstipendium 2020 has decreased slightly

28,100 students received funding under the Scholarship Program Act

Wiesbaden – In 2020, 28,100 students received a German scholarship under the Scholarship Program Act. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of scholarship holders has decreased slightly over the previous year, for the first time since the program was launched, at 0.3%. As in previous years, their share was 1.0% of all students measured against the provisional total number of students in the winter semester 2020/2021.

Since the summer semester of 2011, Deutschlandstipendium has been used to support students whose careers promise outstanding academic and professional success. According to the law on the creation of a National Scholarship Program (StipG), the proportion of students receiving German scholarships must be increased annually. The law provides for a maximum limit of 8% for funded students.

The highest proportion of scholarship holders in Saarland

As in previous years, Saarland recorded the highest proportion of scholarship holders among all students at 1.6% in the 2020/2021 winter semester. The lowest proportion was 0.4% in Thuringia.

The number of private donors has increased by 1% over the previous year

At the rate of 300 euros per month, half of Deutschlandstipendium is funded by the federal government and half by private donors. In 2020, universities received 29.4 million euros in funding from private donors, up 1.0% from the previous year. The number of donors also increased by 1.0% to 8,140 In 2020, the funders were primarily corporations (2,930 funders with a total funding of 9.1 million euros) and other legal entities under private law, such as registered association cooperatives or foundation laws under private law (2,100 donors with a total funding of 12 million euros).
