Personal requirements for training assistance entitlements are basically German citizenship or a residential status listed in the BAföG, general eligibility for selected training and not exceeding the age limit. Students in higher technical schools, academies and universities usually receive grants and half as interest-free state loans. Students receive support as a full subsidy. So you don’t have to refund.
What is the credit for BAföG?
Since training grants are required, the applicant must disclose his assets. BAföG plans a lump sum as a monthly requirement, the amount of which depends on the training facilities (such as high school, university) and accommodation (with parents or those living abroad). Trainees receiving BAföG who are receiving qualified training and meeting individual qualification requirements depend on their financial resources and whether their spouse or registered partner and their parents are sufficient to meet their financial needs during the training.
Parental income is ignored only under certain conditions. However, the income and assets of the trainees and the income of their spouses or registered partners who are not permanently separated from them are always taken into consideration.
However, there are exceptions. BAföG assumes that initially trainees themselves and those who are obliged to support them under civil law – such as their spouses or registered partners and parents – will pay for maintenance and training. In principle, BAföG and its benefits are of secondary importance.
How big is the promotion?
The maximum monthly funding rate for students in higher technical schools, academies and universities has been 861 euros since the winter semester of 2020. It also includes a surcharge of 109 euros for health and nursing care insurance. Accommodation supplement for students who no longer live at home, which includes, 325 euros. Students who no longer live with their parents receive a maximum of 694 euros.
For timely flow of funds, the initial application must be submitted two months before the start of the course, as processing may take some time. Mine Tip: In most universities, incomplete applications may also be submitted and missing documents may be submitted later. The relevant Studentenwerk provides information on this topic.
Other sources of funding for future graduates
Many students cannot meet BAföG alone, so they have to take out a student loan. Unlike ordinary loans, living expenses and tuition fees are not paid at once, but monthly. Offers are available at major banks across the country and locally at Savings Banks and Cooperative Banks. However, the most common provider is KfW Bank. There is a maximum credit limit of 650 euros per month for students. A student loan, however, must be repaid in full.

Anyone who is going to take the exam should also know about bridging, interim and final financing loans. These loans, taken from the Federal Office of Administration, student unions and the EW Kuhlmann Foundation, are used to provide financial support at the end of a course – at the examination stage. They are particularly characterized by low interest rates and are sometimes even interest-free.
Numerous foundations and organizations offer scholarships so that you can fully engage yourself in your studies. By the way: a scholarship does not only support extremely talented and needy students. Depending on the goals and adaptations of the foundation, migration is supported with an educational background or with children, for example, with a background. There are also scholarships for certain subjects or faculties: Scholarships from the Veith Berghoff Foundation support students of ship and marine engineering, for example; The Emil-Freiherr-Marschalk-von-Ostheim’sche Foundation provides scholarships for students from the upper, central and lower Franconia, as well as the former county area of Heinberg. So there is something for almost everyone.
Students can get the right scholarship at www.mystipendium.de, the homepage of “Initiatives for Transparent Student Support”. The amount of funding within the foundation varies greatly. It ranges from a one-time payment of several hundred euros to a monthly payment of 1500 euros; For doctoral students, the amount of funding is often much higher.
Education Fund: Study as an investment
The concept of education funding is still a very young variant of financing studies. Investors buy shares in the fund. Selected students are funded from the fund. After finishing their studies, they return a certain percentage of their income for a certain period of time. It pays investors and then supports new students.
